Will I Qualify for a Mobility Assistance Dog?
One of the most frequently asked questions when a person is contemplating applying for a Florida mobility service dog is “Will I qualify for a mobility assistance dog?” At Genesis Assistance Dogs, Inc. we take the application process very seriously. Our mobility service dogs are specifically trained to assist individuals with disabilities such as balance issues, altered gait, and those utilizing wheelchairs or other assistive devices as a result of physical disabilities that impact their mobility and fine motor skills.
Having a disability that impacts your mobility or fine motor skills does not automatically qualify you for a Genesis Assistance Dog. After reviewing your initial application, should the advisory board determine that we may be able to assist you, the process will move forward. At that time you will be contacted for an initial interview and/or asked to complete a detailed application. If it is determined that we cannot assist you in your quest for a Florida mobility service dog, you will be notified.
The detailed application will require documentation from your physician indicating why a mobility service dog will be of benefit to your quality of life. There must be a demonstrated need for assistance performing mobility-related tasks. Please keep in mind that determination as to whether or not you will qualify to be matched with a Genesis assistance dog is not solely based upon the tasks a dog would be able to perform to assist you.
Another important component considered by Genesis in determining if you qualify for a mobility assistance dog is insuring that you are physically and emotionally able to provide for a dog. Your living environment must allow for the appropriate and comprehensive care of the dog at all times. If you live with other family members, the entire family must be engaged in the process of having a dog as a member of their family. Should you be unable to physically manage and care for the dog, there must be a willing caregiver designated to see to the daily care and needs of the service dog. If these requirements are satisfied, you will be placed on the waiting list.
Genesis Assistance Dogs, Inc. takes great care in matching approved applicants with the most appropriate dog. Your placement on the waiting list does not determine the period of time you will wait before you are matched with a skilled Florida mobility assistance dog. The process of pairing a mobility assistance dog with its human partner is one that requires careful consideration by our trainer and advisory board. The wait may seem long, but the rewards are immeasurable.
