If you’re a dog lover you are more than aware that the cost of providing the best of everything for your beloved pet seems to be rising exponentially. This is also true at Genesis Assistance Dogs, Inc. The rising price of food, a feeding bowl, water bowl, treats, toys, bedding, flea and tick prevention, grooming, licensing, and of course veterinary care – well you know the drill – it’s hard to keep up. Now imagine you are training a service dog in Florida that has been purchased from a reputable, top notch breeder. Factor in a minimum of two years of specialized training, a harness, vest, leash, collar, martingale and any other assistance device needed and the cost rises to approximately $26,000 from puppy to fully trained assistance dog. Then when training is complete, you match this dog to a person with a disability. You train them to work as a team. When satisfied that they are ready, you officially place this dog and assistance device(s) free of charge with that person; forever changing both of their lives.
The requests for service dogs in Florida are increasing with each passing year as are the costs of training and placement. Genesis Assistance Dogs, Inc. is 501(c) 3 organization which means that we rely solely on the generosity of our Community Partners, Foundations, Event Hosts, Puppy Raisers, Individual Donors and Supporters to sustain our efforts. There is no paid staff at Genesis which allows us to keep our operating costs minimal.
